چکیده

We show that the problem of deciding whether the vertex set of a graph can be covered with at most two bicliques is in NP∩coNP. We thus almost determine the computational complexity of a problem whose status has remained open for quite some time. Our result implies that a polynomial time algorithm for the problem is more likely than it being NP-complete unless P = NP. keywords: Bicliques, Polynomial Time Algorithms, NP, coNP

Covering Graphs with Few Complete Bipartite Subgraphs

We consider computational problems on covering graphs with bicliques (complete bipartite subgraphs). Given a graph and an integer k, the biclique cover problem asks whether the edge-set of the graph can be covered with at most k bicliques; the biclique partition problem is defined similarly with the additional condition that the bicliques are required to be mutually edge-disjoint. The biclique ...

The Shrinking Property for NP and coNP

We study the shrinking and separation properties (two notions well-known in descriptive set theory) for NP and coNP and show that under reasonable complexity-theoretic assumptions, both properties do not hold for NP and the shrinking property does not hold for coNP. In particular we obtain the following results. 1. NP and coNP do not have the shrinking property, unless PH is finite. In general,...

Recognizing Pseudo-intents is coNP-complete

The problem of recognizing whether a subset of attributes is a pseudo-intent is shown to be coNP-hard, which together with the previous results means that this problem is coNP-complete. Recognizing an essential intent is shown to be NP-complete and recognizing the lectically largest pseudo-intent is shown to be coNP-hard.

On the computational complexity of evolution

It is well-known that the problem of recognizing an ESS in a symmetric bimatrix game is coNPcomplete. In this paper, we show that recognizing an ESS even in doubly symmetric bimatrix games is also coNP-complete. Our result further implies that recognizing asymptotically stable equilibria of the replicator dynamic in this class of games is also a coNP-complete problem. It is also known that a st...

Detecting Bicliques in GF[q]

We consider the problem of finding planted bicliques in random matrices over GF [q]. That is, our input matrix is a GF [q]-sum of an unknown biclique (rank-1 matrix) and a random matrix. We study different models for the random graphs and characterize the conditions when the planted biclique can be recovered. We also empirically show that a simple heuristic can reliably recover the planted bicl...
